Spring Walk N Roll Jr. Challenge 2022

(Safe Routes to School Contest)

Hello Parents and Guardians,

I hope you and your family had a wonderful spring break and that you’re ready for an awesome end to the school year! I’m excited to inform all of you about our final walk/bike to school event, the Spring Walk ‘N’ Roll Jr. Challenge. This is the final component of our year-long event to promote healthy lifestyles and physical activity with our students. At the conclusion of the challenge, the students that participate will have the opportunity to win prizes and two students in the district will win a bike! There were 10 schools selected from across the district to be part of the pilot program due to their proximity to the predetermined safe streets in Dearborn. I think this challenge will continue to help our students to be physically active and to have fun! I also think it will help to alleviate some of the traffic in front of our school and it will help to lower the carbon footprint of the families involved because more students will be walking/biking to and from school.

Starting Tuesday, April 5th, I will be showing a new informational video to all of the kindergarten-5th students during my physical education classes that will explain the new challenge. I will also hand out permission forms to any new student that would like to join the challenge. Students that turned in the permission slip during the fall challenge or winter walking club are already signed up. Once the form is brought back to me I will give them access to the Walk ‘N’ Roll Jr. Challenge Schoology page. I will accept the permission form anytime during the challenge, which ends on May 20th.The students must fill out the weekly log on Schoology no later than Saturday morning each week, so our school will get credit for them participating. New for the spring challenge, the students will now have the option to turn in a handwritten weekly log to me at the end of each week. The challenge/contest will last for six weeks, from April 11th to May 20th.

The school with the most students participating during the six weeks will win the traveling trophy as well as one student from the winning school will receive one of the raffled off bikes. The other bike will be raffled off to a student from one of the other nine schools. I will also raffle off a limited number of bike helmets and wheel lights to participating Howard students at the conclusion of the Spring Walk ‘N’ Roll Jr. Challenge.

The students who turned in a permission slip during the Fall Walk ‘N’ Roll Jr. Challenge or Howard Winter Walking Club will receive a t-shirt during the week of April 4th – 8th. The t-shirt will have the winning design that was submitted by our very own 4th grade student, Carson Post!

I have attached below a copy of the Walk ‘N’ Roll Jr. Challenge permission form for your convenience. This form as well as the informational video and other documentation can be easily accessed on the Walk ‘N’ Roll Jr. Challenge Schoology page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me anytime. halibuf@dearbornschools.org

Have a wonderful day!!

Thank you,
