Safe Routes to School Contest-Walk N Roll Jr. Challenge 21-22

Hello Parents and Guardians,

I hope your family is having a great start to the school year!  I’m excited to inform you about a new walk/bike to school challenge that we will be promoting and facilitating at Howard.  It’s called the Dearborn Public Schools Walk ‘N’ Roll Jr. Challenge and it is part of the Healthy Dearborn Coalition. This challenge is one component of a year-long program to promote health and physical activity with our students.  There will also be two more challenges/contests this school year and they will be in the winter and spring.  At the conclusion of the first challenge, the students that participate will have the opportunity to win multiple prizes and one student in the district will win a bike!  There are 10 schools that were selected across the district to be part of the pilot program due to their proximity to the predetermined safe streets in Dearborn.  I think this challenge will help our students to be physically active and to have fun!  I also think it will help to alleviate some of the traffic in the morning and afternoon because more students will be walking/biking to and from school.

Starting Monday, Sept 13th, I will be showing a video to all of the kindergarten-5th students during my physical education classes that will introduce and explain the challenge.  I will also show the students how to fill out the walk/bike weekly log on Schoology and I will be handing out a permission slip form that will need to be brought back to me.  The students can hand it to me as they enter the gym for PE class.  I will accept the permission form anytime during the challenge, which ends on Oct 29th. It is very important that the students fill out the weekly log no later than Saturday morning each week if they want to get their information entered into the prize raffles. The challenge/contest will last for six weeks, from Sept 20th – Oct 29th.

Linked is the Walk ‘N’ Roll Jr. Challenge flyer in case you would like to know more about the challenge.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me anytime.

Thank you,
