Big Read Call for Entries

Big Read 2015-16 image Raven shadow (without markings)Do you like to write scary stories or mysteries? Do you have a ghost story to tell? Do you have any Gothic poetry up your sleeve?

As part of The Big Read celebration of Edgar Allan Poe, Dearborn Public Library is sending out a call for original Poe inspired stories or poetry.

The deadline is November 15 (originally October 31). This program is open to all ages.

Your work may be selected for publication in the Poe short story collection.

To participate, email your short story (or other written work) of approximately one to three pages, along with one or two sentences about yourself, or

The content should be in a Word document or written as text in the email message. Please also complete the release form, which is available at, so that your work can be considered for publication.

Original photos and artwork, along with your narrative, are also welcome and can be emailed along with your text.

Possible topics include:

  • Scary / suspense or sci-fi stories or Mysteries
  • Ghost stories or poems
  • Something about dreams, as The Big Read theme is “Dreaming Dreams No Mortal Ever Dared to Dream Before”
  • Anything else Poe related, whether fictional or true

Dearborn Public Library will compile all selected stories and produce a Poe book of for its library collection. Also, copies will be available for purchase via a link on its website. Proceeds will benefit the Dearborn Public Library.

Fun-filled activities and events centered on Poe’s great tales and poems will take place in and around Dearborn in February through March 2016.

The kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, February 6, 2-4 p.m. at Henry Ford Centennial Library. The Big Read wraps up with a visit from Poe himself onSaturday, March 19 (location TBD).

A few things to remember:

There will be no school on November 3, and November 6 is a half day.  Dismissal will be at 11:45

For those of you who ordered Better Made Chips, you may pick your order up here on 10/29 between 3-5pm

Please DO NOT stop in the street to pick you students up.  There are several side streets available for parking so you can get your student on the sidewalk in front of the school.  Please cross your students at the crosswalks.  The buses are not able to travel down York and Lawrence at the end of the day because of the traffic.  Police will begin enforcing this directive.

Funeral Arrangements for Ryan Whiston

Hi Howard Family:

As many of you know by now, the family of our former superintendent, Brian Whiston, has suffered a great tragedy this week.  His oldest son, Ryan, lost his life in a car accident early Monday morning.  For those of you who wish to send condolences or attend services, the arrangements are below.  Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.

We have received many request for information regarding visitation and funeral arrangements for Ryan Whiston, son of former Superintendent and current State Superintendent Brian Whiston.

Update to MyON!

Dear Families,     Here at Howard Elementary School, we now have the myON program.  This program is free for our families and lets families download up to twenty books at a time, once you download the free myON app.  This program allows students to take ownership of their own reading interests and their own literacy growth.  All of our parents can use the program, at home, at the public library, on mobile devices.  We are so proud to offer this program to our Howard Elementary families.  Through our school, you will be provided free access to myON books for the school year. The myON program will provide you with infinite access to a growing collection of enhanced digital books that can be read anytime, anywhere there is an Internet connection.  This myON collection is also accessible through mobile devices and reading can occur offline by downloading books through the myON app found in the Apple App Store or Google Play.  Create “your family of readers” and engage your children all school year long.

(When you start to type in the name of the school, the full school name will pop up.  You can then click on “Howard  Elementary,  Dearborn Public Schools.”)  Enter your student’s id number as a username and enter your student’s date of birth as a password.  (Be sure to use eight numbers: two for the month, two for the day, and four for the year of birth.  If the date of birth was 1/1/2007, you would simply enter 01012007.  If it was 10/12/2005, you would enter 10122005.  If it was 10/4/2008, you would enter 10042008. Parent Talk Classes coming to Howard!!!

Increase achievement and decrease discipline issues with effective Parent Talk. Learn communication skills that empower, encourage self-responsible behaviors, self-motivation and character development. Learn practical skills to positively Effect the social and emotional development of your children and family. Certificate of completion is awarded to participants who complete the course.

Classes are Friday’s at 1:30-3:00pm in Media Center

A couple of things to consider this week:


We are in need of tennis ball donations.  Please send in tennis balls if you have them, or happen to have the fortune at this time to buy some from one of your favorite stores:-).  We would greatly appreciate it~


Also, later this week, we will be sending home communication regarding the Better Made Potato Chip Sale.  Keep an eye out.
